What Is Laser
Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive surgery, is a group of procedures designed to help correct common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism using special laser technology.

The type of laser eye surgery you may have depends on your refractive error and eye health, which we can help determine when you come in for a consultation.

While many people can have laser eye surgery and report having clearer vision after their procedure, it still doesn’t guarantee 20/20 vision. You may have to continue wearing glasses or contact lenses to make the most of your vision even after having surgery.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery aims to correct your refractive error and reduce your reliance on glasses and contact lenses, but different surgeries achieve this in different ways.

At Annapolis Vision Center, we provide consultations for LASIK, PRK, and SMILE eye surgeries. We’ll walk you through what you can expect from the procedures during your consultation, but you can peek through our brief overviews to get a better idea of each surgery.

If you have any questions or concerns, we are happy to address them when you come in for your appointment.

LASIK

LASIK eye surgery is the most common type of laser eye surgery in North America. It boasts high satisfaction rates from patients and can help correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

During the procedure, your ophthalmologist numbs your eyes with specialty eye drops before making a small incision in the outermost layer of your cornea to create a flap. Opening this flap will give your surgeon access to your underlying corneal tissue, which they then reshape using an excimer laser.

Reshaping this tissue corrects your refractive error, and the flap is placed back in its original position after completing the surgery to heal.

We may not recommend LASIK if your lifestyle or environment may irritate or otherwise affect the flap created for the procedure.

PRK eye surgery is another common way to correct your refractive error, but we may recommend this procedure if you have thin corneas or dry eyes.

PRK is similar to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap in the outermost layer of your cornea, this layer is removed completely. After removing this layer, your surgeon can correct your vision with an excimer laser.

The removed layer will heal over a few weeks, and we’ll monitor your recovery to ensure your eyes heal properly.

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) surgery is also similar to LASIK, but with some differences to help correct nearsightedness.

Your ophthalmologist will use a femtosecond laser during the surgery to create a small, removable piece of lens tissue inside your cornea called a lenticule. Then, using the same laser, your surgeon will make a small incision in the outermost layer of your cornea to get access to the lenticule and remove it.

Removing the lenticule reshapes your cornea and corrects your refractive error.
